Before & After: 5 Stunning Furniture Restorations
The Art of Transformation
Every piece of furniture that comes through our doors in San Antonio tells a story. Sometimes it is a story of decades of faithful service in a family home. Other times it is a story of sudden disaster — a pipe burst, a house fire, a careless moving crew. What ties them all together is the moment when the owner looks at the damage and wonders whether the piece can be saved.
The answer, more often than not, is yes. Here are five real restoration stories from our shop that demonstrate what professional craftsmanship can accomplish.
1. The Flooded Heirloom Dresser — Helotes
A family in Helotes called us after a water heater failure flooded their bedroom. The worst casualty was a solid walnut dresser that had been in the family for four generations — handmade by the owner's great-grandfather in the 1920s.
The damage: The bottom two drawers had been sitting in standing water for nearly 18 hours before the family discovered the leak. The wood was severely swollen, the veneer on the drawer fronts was bubbling and separating, the dovetail joints had expanded and split, and a thick layer of white water staining covered the lower half of the piece.
The restoration: We carefully disassembled the affected drawers, allowing each component to dry in our climate-controlled shop over several days to prevent further cracking. We re-glued and clamped every split joint, replaced two sections of veneer with period-appropriate walnut veneer, and addressed the water staining through a careful process of oxalic acid treatment and hand sanding. The entire piece was then refinished to match its original warm walnut tone.
The result: The dresser looks exactly as it did before the flood — perhaps better, since we also tightened the upper drawer joints that had loosened over the decades. Four generations of history, preserved for the fifth. This is what water damage restoration looks like when it is done right.
2. The Fire-Scorched Dining Table — Alamo Heights
A kitchen fire in an Alamo Heights home caused significant smoke and heat damage to an adjacent dining room. The solid oak dining table — a Restoration Hardware piece the family had purchased just two years earlier — bore the worst of it.
The damage
The finish was completely destroyed by heat exposure, turning cloudy and blistered across the entire surface. Heavy soot deposits had penetrated into the wood grain. The table's trestle base showed heat warping on one side, and the entire piece reeked of smoke.
The restoration: We started with professional smoke and soot removal using specialized cleaning agents that neutralize odor at the molecular level rather than masking it. The old finish was completely stripped, and we hand-sanded the entire surface to remove soot that had penetrated below the finish line. The warped trestle component was steamed and clamped back into alignment over a 48-hour period. Finally, we applied a new finish that matched the factory original.
The result: The family could not believe it was the same table. Zero smoke odor, a flawless finish, and structural integrity fully restored. The insurance adjuster who had initially recommended replacement approved the restoration claim without hesitation after seeing our work. Learn more about our fire damage restoration process.
3. The Cat-Shredded Wingback Chair — San Antonio
A San Antonio client brought us a beautiful tufted wingback chair that her two cats had treated as their personal scratching post for the better part of three years.
The damage
The front of both arms was shredded down to the batting. The lower front panel had long, deep claw marks that had torn through the fabric entirely. Several of the tufting buttons were missing, pulled loose during the cats' climbing sessions. The wooden legs showed claw marks as well.
The restoration: We stripped the damaged upholstery sections, repaired the underlying batting and foam where the cats had dug through to it, and sourced a matching fabric to reupholster the affected panels. Rather than replacing only the damaged sections, we reupholstered the entire chair to ensure a perfect color and texture match throughout. Missing tufting buttons were recreated to match the originals. The wooden legs were sanded smooth, filled where deep gouges existed, and refinished.
The result: The chair looks factory-new. No evidence of three years of feline warfare. The client also asked us to apply a fabric protector to help resist future damage — a smart move for any pet owner. See all the ways we handle pet damage repair.
4. The Mid-Century Credenza — Austin
An Austin client found a 1960s Danish teak credenza at an estate sale in the Hill Country. It had the clean lines and warm wood tones that mid-century collectors seek, but decades of neglect had taken a serious toll.
The damage: The teak finish was completely faded and gray from years of sun exposure. Multiple ring stains from glasses and vases marred the top surface. One of the sliding doors was off its track and warped. Two drawer pulls were missing, and the remaining hardware was tarnished and pitted. Inside, the drawers smelled musty, suggesting long storage in a humid environment.
The restoration: We began with a full strip-down of the old finish, revealing gorgeous teak grain beneath the gray surface oxidation. Ring stains were removed through careful sanding and oxalic acid treatment. The warped sliding door was steamed, straightened, and rehung on new tracks. We sourced period-correct replacement drawer pulls from a specialty vintage hardware supplier. The interior was treated with an antimicrobial solution and sealed to eliminate the musty odor. Finally, we applied a traditional Danish oil finish — the same finish these pieces received at the factory — bringing the warm, honey-gold teak color back to life.
The result: The credenza now sits proudly in the client's East Austin living room, looking as stunning as the day it left the workshop in Copenhagen. A $200 estate sale find, professionally restored, now worth well over $2,000. This is the magic of expert furniture refinishing.
5. The Moving-Damaged Bedroom Set — New Braunfels
A military family relocating to JBSA-Lackland hired movers to transport their bedroom set from Virginia. When the shipment arrived, the damage was extensive.
The damage: The headboard of their king-size sleigh bed had a deep gouge running nearly 18 inches along the curved top rail. The matching nightstand had a cracked leg — snapped cleanly at the joint. The dresser mirror frame was split at one corner, and the dresser top had a large area of finish damage where something heavy had been stacked on it during transit.
The restoration: The headboard gouge was filled with a custom-mixed wood filler, carefully shaped to match the curved profile, then sanded and stained to blend invisibly with the surrounding cherry wood. The nightstand leg was repaired with a combination of epoxy reinforcement and traditional doweling to restore full structural strength. The mirror frame was re-glued, clamped, and reinforced internally, then refinished. The dresser top was stripped and refinished to eliminate the compression damage.
The result: Every piece was returned looking as it did before the move. The family used our detailed restoration report and photos to support their moving damage claim, which was approved in full. We work with military families near JBSA regularly and understand the claims process. Whether it is a PCS move gone wrong or any other moving damage, we are here to help.
