Beyond the Home
Commercial Furniture Restoration
When most people think of furniture restoration, they picture a family heirloom or a beloved living room sofa. But some of the most important — and most challenging — restoration work happens in commercial settings. Churches, restaurants, hotels, offices, and public institutions rely on furniture that must withstand heavy daily use while maintaining an appearance that reflects the quality and character of the organization.
At Weathersby Guild, commercial restoration is a significant and growing part of our work across San Antonio, Austin, and the broader Central Texas region. Here is a look at how we serve commercial clients and the unique challenges each sector presents.
Church Pew Restoration
Central Texas is home to hundreds of churches, many with pews that are 50, 75, or even 100+ years old. These pews are more than seating — they are part of the congregation's history, craftsmanship that reflects the values and aesthetics of the era when the church was built. Replacing them with modern alternatives changes the character of the sanctuary entirely.
The good news is that well-built church pews, particularly those made from solid oak, walnut, or pine, are exceptionally good candidates for restoration. The heavy, dense hardwood construction that made them durable enough to last a century also makes them worth saving for the next century.
Common Church Pew Issues We Address
- Worn and damaged finish — decades of contact from clothing, body oils, and cleaning products wear through the original finish, leaving the wood unprotected and increasingly shabby in appearance
- Structural looseness — pew ends wobble, seat boards shift, and back rails loosen as the original glue and fasteners fatigue over generations of use
- Scratched and gouged wood — hymnals, purses, keys, and general use create surface damage that accumulates over the years
- Cushion and upholstery deterioration — padded pews develop compressed, stained, or torn cushions that are uncomfortable and unsightly
- Water damage — roof leaks, flooding, and HVAC condensation issues damage pews that sit below vulnerable points in the building envelope
- Outdated appearance — some congregations want to refresh the look of their pews to match a sanctuary renovation while preserving the original woodwork
Our Church Pew Restoration Process
We work with churches to develop a restoration plan that respects both the historical character of the pews and the practical needs of a modern congregation.
Assessment
We inspect every pew in the sanctuary, documenting the condition, identifying structural concerns, and cataloging the scope of work. For large sanctuaries, this may involve 30, 50, or more pews.
Structural Repair: Loose joints are disassembled where necessary, cleaned, re-glued with modern adhesives that exceed the original bond strength, and clamped. Cracked or broken components are repaired or replicated to match the original woodworking. We use traditional joinery techniques appropriate to the era and construction style of the pews.
Surface Restoration: The existing finish is carefully removed — we use methods appropriate to the wood species and original finish type, avoiding harsh chemical strippers that can damage the wood grain. The bare wood is sanded smooth, any gouges or scratches are filled and blended, and a new finish is applied. We match the original color and sheen unless the church requests a different look.
Cushion and Upholstery
For padded pews, we replace worn foam with high-density commercial-grade cushioning and reupholster with durable fabric selected for both aesthetics and longevity. We work with the church's design committee to choose fabrics that complement the sanctuary's interior.
Hardware
Original decorative hardware — hymnal racks, number plates, memorial plaques — is cleaned, restored, and reinstalled. Missing or damaged hardware is replicated to match.
A Real-World Example
Historic Oak Pews in San Antonio
A San Antonio congregation approached us about restoring 42 solid oak pews that had been in their sanctuary since the church was built in 1928. The pews had been refinished once in the 1970s with a dark polyurethane that had yellowed and was peeling badly. Several pews had structural issues — wobbling ends and loose seat boards. The cushions, added in the 1990s, were compressed and stained.
We removed the 1970s finish to reveal the beautiful quarter-sawn white oak beneath. Every joint was inspected and re-glued where needed. The wood was refinished in a warm, natural tone that honored the original craftsmanship while brightening the sanctuary. New cushions were installed in a deep burgundy fabric selected by the church's renovation committee. The project was completed in phases to minimize disruption to services — we worked on eight to ten pews at a time, returning them before picking up the next batch.
The result transformed the sanctuary. The congregation's comment was that the church looked the way it must have looked when their grandparents first walked through the doors.
Restaurant Booth and Seating Repair
Restaurants face a unique furniture challenge: their seating takes more abuse in a single month than most residential furniture takes in a year. Hundreds of people sit, slide, spill, and shift in those booths and chairs daily. Add the heat, grease, and humidity of a commercial kitchen environment, and restaurant furniture deteriorates fast.
Common Restaurant Furniture Issues
- Torn, cracked, or stained vinyl and leather booth upholstery
- Compressed and sagging booth cushions that make seating uncomfortable
- Scratched and worn table surfaces
- Loose or broken chair joints from constant heavy use
- Frame damage from moving booths and tables for cleaning
- Outdated upholstery that no longer matches a refreshed interior design
Why Restoration Beats Replacement for Restaurants
A single restaurant booth can cost $800 to $2,500+ to replace, not including the table. For a restaurant with 15 to 30 booths, full replacement becomes a major capital expense that can exceed $40,000 to $75,000. Professional restoration — reupholstering, re-foaming, refinishing, and structural repair — typically costs 40 to 60 percent of replacement, delivers a result that looks brand new, and can be scheduled to minimize restaurant downtime.
We work with restaurant owners and managers to plan restoration projects around their business hours. Booths can be picked up after Saturday night service and returned before Wednesday lunch, keeping disruption to a minimum.
Hotel Furniture Refurbishment
Hotels cycle through furniture faster than most commercial environments. Guest room case goods — dressers, nightstands, desks, headboards — take constant wear from luggage, personal items, housekeeping chemicals, and the general turnover of thousands of guests per year. Lobby and common area furniture faces even heavier traffic.
Major hotel chains typically renovate on a 7 to 10 year cycle, but furniture often shows significant wear by year 4 or 5. Full replacement is the traditional approach, but it is expensive, wasteful, and increasingly at odds with sustainability goals.
Hotel Furniture Restoration Services
- Case good refinishing — removing scratches, ring marks, and wear patterns, then applying a fresh finish that restores the factory appearance
- Upholstery replacement — headboards, lobby seating, desk chairs, and accent pieces reupholstered in updated fabrics that align with the current design scheme
- Structural repair — tightening joints, replacing drawer slides, fixing broken legs and frames
- Touch-up and spot repair — for properties that need a cost-effective refresh between major renovations
For Central Texas hotels, motor lodges, and bed-and-breakfasts in tourism-heavy areas like Fredericksburg, Wimberley, and New Braunfels, professional furniture refurbishment extends the life of their investment while keeping the guest experience fresh.
Office Furniture Restoration
Corporate offices, law firms, medical practices, and executive suites often have high-quality furniture — conference tables, executive desks, credenzas, reception area seating — that represents a significant investment. When these pieces show wear, replacement costs are substantial, particularly for solid wood conference tables and custom executive furniture.
Common Office Restoration Projects
- Conference table refinishing — removing scratches, water rings, and surface damage, then restoring the original finish or updating to a new color
- Executive desk restoration — addressing years of wear from daily use, keyboard trays, and desktop equipment
- Reception and waiting area reupholstery — refreshing the look of seating that greets every client and visitor
- Cubicle panel refurbishment — for open-plan offices looking to refresh without full systems replacement
A large conference table that cost $8,000 to $15,000 can be restored for a fraction of that investment, often without removing it from the building.
Why Commercial Clients Choose Weathersby Guild
Working with commercial clients requires a different approach than residential restoration. The stakes are different — a church needs their pews back before Sunday, a restaurant cannot have booths out of service during a busy weekend, a hotel needs minimal disruption to guest rooms.

- Volume capacity — we can handle large-scale projects involving dozens of pieces simultaneously
- Project management — dedicated coordination for multi-phase projects that may span weeks or months
